1. What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?
Cookies are small data files that may be stored on or accessed from your device when you visit a website.
Cookies can help a website recognise a browser or device, remember preferences, maintain shopping-cart functionality, enable checkout, support security and fraud prevention, understand how visitors interact with the website and, where permitted, support analytics or advertising.
Similar technologies may include:
-
pixels;
-
tags;
-
local storage;
-
tracking scripts;
-
software development kits;
-
device identifiers;
-
browser identifiers;
-
server-side or event-based tracking technologies; and
-
other technologies that store, access or transmit information associated with a browser, device or online interaction.
For convenience, this Policy uses the term “cookies” to refer collectively to cookies and similar technologies unless stated otherwise.
2. Why JAPAN-ITEMS™ Uses Cookies
JAPAN-ITEMS™ may use cookies to:
-
operate the Store;
-
maintain shopping-cart functionality;
-
enable checkout and payment functionality;
-
authenticate customer accounts;
-
remember privacy choices;
-
remember language, currency or market preferences;
-
protect the Store and customers;
-
detect and prevent fraud or misuse;
-
understand Store performance;
-
identify technical errors;
-
understand how customers interact with products and pages;
-
improve navigation and customer experience;
-
measure marketing performance;
-
support advertising and retargeting where permitted by law; and
-
comply with applicable privacy requirements.
The cookies and technologies used may vary depending on Store configuration, Shopify functionality, installed applications, marketing tools, your location and your privacy choices.
3. Categories of Cookies
Cookies used through the Store may fall into one or more of the following categories.
3.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies
Strictly necessary cookies are used where reasonably required to operate the Store or provide a service requested by the user.
They may support:
-
shopping-cart functionality;
-
checkout;
-
payment processing;
-
authentication;
-
customer accounts;
-
security;
-
fraud prevention;
-
network management;
-
privacy-choice storage;
-
session management; and
-
essential website navigation.
Where permitted by applicable law, these technologies may be used without consent because they are necessary to provide the Store or a service expressly requested by the user.
Strictly necessary cookies are generally not available to disable through the Store's consent interface.
Blocking them through browser or device settings may prevent parts of the Store from functioning correctly.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ does not intentionally classify analytics or advertising technologies as strictly necessary merely because they are useful to the business.
3.2 Functional Cookies
Functional cookies support optional features and enhanced Store functionality.
They may be used to remember or provide:
-
language preferences;
-
currency preferences;
-
region or market selections;
-
display preferences;
-
recently viewed products;
-
saved settings; and
-
other convenience features.
Depending on applicable law and the nature of the technology, consent may be required before certain functional cookies are used.
If these technologies are disabled, some optional features may be unavailable or less personalised.
3.3 Analytics and Performance Cookies
Analytics and performance technologies help JAPAN-ITEMS™ understand how visitors use the Store and how the Store performs.
They may collect or generate information relating to:
-
pages visited;
-
products viewed;
-
navigation paths;
-
links or buttons clicked;
-
session duration;
-
traffic sources;
-
campaign attribution;
-
browser and device characteristics;
-
approximate location derived from IP address;
-
Store errors;
-
loading performance; and
-
aggregated or pseudonymous usage patterns.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ may use this information to:
-
analyse Store performance;
-
improve product presentation;
-
identify technical problems;
-
improve navigation;
-
understand customer journeys; and
-
make operational or commercial decisions.
Where applicable law requires prior consent, analytics and performance technologies requiring consent will not intentionally be activated until the appropriate consent has been obtained.
3.4 Marketing and Advertising Cookies
Marketing and advertising technologies may be used to promote JAPAN-ITEMS™, measure advertising effectiveness and, where permitted, personalise advertising.
They may support:
-
advertising campaign measurement;
-
conversion tracking;
-
attribution;
-
retargeting or remarketing;
-
advertising-frequency management;
-
audience creation;
-
customer-interest analysis; and
-
personalised or relevant advertising.
Information associated with these technologies may be disclosed to or collected by advertising and technology partners.
Depending on applicable law, certain advertising-related disclosures may be legally classified as sale, sharing, targeted advertising, cross-context behavioural advertising or similar regulated activity even where JAPAN-ITEMS™ does not receive money in exchange for the information.
Where applicable law requires consent, marketing and advertising technologies requiring consent will not intentionally be activated before valid consent has been obtained.
4. Shopify and Store Technologies
The JAPAN-ITEMS™ Store is powered by Shopify.
Shopify may use cookies and similar technologies to provide or support e-commerce functionality including:
-
Store operation;
-
shopping cart;
-
checkout;
-
customer authentication;
-
security;
-
fraud prevention;
-
privacy-choice management;
-
Store analytics; and
-
other platform functionality.
Shopify may process certain information on behalf of JAPAN-ITEMS™ and may also process certain information for its own purposes in accordance with its applicable privacy and cookie terms.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ uses Shopify privacy functionality where appropriate to help manage customer privacy choices.
Shopify provides customer-privacy settings and consent-management functionality, including cookie-banner tools and mechanisms related to data-sharing opt-outs.
5. Third-Party Technologies
The Store may use third-party applications, integrations or service providers that use cookies or similar technologies.
These may include:
-
payment providers;
-
analytics providers;
-
advertising platforms;
-
marketing tools;
-
email and communication providers;
-
fraud-prevention providers;
-
customer-support tools;
-
social-media platforms;
-
embedded-content providers; and
-
other technology providers.
The specific providers used by the Store may change as JAPAN-ITEMS™ modifies its technology stack or services.
Third-party providers may process information according to their own privacy notices, cookie policies and contractual arrangements.
Where JAPAN-ITEMS™ is legally responsible for obtaining consent before a third-party technology is activated, we will seek to configure the Store so that such technology is subject to the applicable consent choice.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ does not control every aspect of processing independently performed by a third-party provider.
6. Consent
Where applicable law requires consent before information is stored on or accessed from a user's device, JAPAN-ITEMS™ will request the appropriate consent before using the relevant non-essential technologies.
Depending on the Store configuration and your location, you may be provided with options such as:
-
Accept All;
-
Reject Non-Essential Cookies; or
-
Manage Preferences.
Consent should be a genuine choice.
Where consent is required, simply continuing to browse the Store is not intended to constitute consent to non-essential tracking.
European data-protection authorities have repeatedly emphasised that consent must meet applicable validity requirements and that non-essential tracking should not simply be treated as accepted by default.
7. Rejecting Non-Essential Cookies
Where a consent mechanism is provided, customers may reject non-essential cookies.
Rejecting analytics, advertising or other optional technologies should not prevent ordinary access to the essential shopping functionality of the Store, although certain optional or personalised features may be limited.
Strictly necessary technologies may continue to operate where permitted by law because they are required for essential Store functionality or a service requested by the user.
8. Managing Cookie Preferences
8.1 Store Privacy Controls
Where available, customers may manage cookie and privacy preferences through the cookie banner, privacy settings or other controls provided through the Store.
Depending on the applicable configuration, customers may be able to:
-
accept categories of cookies;
-
reject non-essential cookies;
-
change previous choices;
-
withdraw consent; and
-
manage advertising-related privacy preferences.
8.2 Browser Settings
Most browsers allow users to manage cookies through browser settings.
These controls may allow you to:
-
delete existing cookies;
-
block cookies;
-
block third-party cookies;
-
receive notifications before certain cookies are stored; or
-
configure permissions for individual websites.
Browser settings are controlled by the browser provider.
Blocking all cookies may prevent essential Store functionality from working correctly.
8.3 Device and Platform Settings
Devices, operating systems, browsers and advertising platforms may provide additional privacy controls.
These may include:
-
advertising identifier settings;
-
tracking permissions;
-
personalised-advertising controls;
-
privacy preference signals; and
-
other device-level privacy settings.
These settings are controlled by the relevant provider and may operate independently of JAPAN-ITEMS™.
9. Withdrawing or Changing Consent
Where processing is based on cookie consent, you may withdraw or change your consent at any time through the Store's available privacy controls.
Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before consent was withdrawn.
After consent is withdrawn, technologies relying on that consent should no longer be intentionally used for future processing to the extent required by applicable law.
Previously collected information may still need to be retained where another lawful basis or legal obligation applies.
If you delete cookies or local storage, use a different browser or device, or reset browser data, your previous privacy preferences may no longer be available.
You may therefore be asked to make a new privacy choice.
10. European Union and European Economic Area
For users in the European Union or European Economic Area, the Store is intended to distinguish between technologies that are necessary to provide the requested service and technologies requiring consent.
Where prior consent is legally required, JAPAN-ITEMS™ intends that non-essential analytics, advertising and similar tracking technologies subject to that requirement are not activated before the applicable consent is obtained.
A user should also be able to withdraw consent after it has been given.
The EDPB's own cookie implementation, for example, does not activate its non-essential analytics unless consent is provided and allows consent to be withdrawn later.
Actual consent behaviour may depend in part on Shopify, installed applications and third-party integrations. JAPAN-ITEMS™ seeks to configure these services consistently with applicable legal requirements.
11. United States Privacy Choices
Depending on the customer's state of residence and the applicability of U.S. state privacy law, customers may have rights concerning certain advertising, sale or sharing of personal information.
Where applicable law provides such rights, JAPAN-ITEMS™ will provide or honour appropriate mechanisms to exercise them.
These may include:
-
a Your Privacy Choices control;
-
a Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information mechanism;
-
advertising opt-out controls;
-
cookie-preference settings; or
-
qualifying browser-based privacy preference signals.
The availability and form of these controls may depend on applicable law and Store configuration.
12. Global Privacy Control and Opt-Out Preference Signals
Some browsers or extensions can transmit privacy preference signals automatically.
One example is Global Privacy Control (“GPC”).
Where applicable law requires JAPAN-ITEMS™ to recognise a qualifying opt-out preference signal, JAPAN-ITEMS™ will process that signal in accordance with the applicable legal requirements.
For example, California privacy rules require covered businesses to honour qualifying opt-out preference signals for sale or sharing, and the California Privacy Protection Agency specifically identifies Global Privacy Control as an example.
A privacy preference signal may apply to the browser or device from which it is sent rather than automatically to every device associated with a customer.
13. Do Not Track
Some browsers may transmit a Do Not Track (“DNT”) signal.
DNT is separate from legally recognised opt-out preference mechanisms such as Global Privacy Control.
Because DNT does not operate under one universally applicable legal or technical standard, JAPAN-ITEMS™ may not respond to every DNT signal unless required by applicable law or supported by the Store's privacy technology.
Where a different qualifying privacy preference signal carries a legally required effect, JAPAN-ITEMS™ will treat that signal in accordance with applicable law.
14. Cookies and Personal Information
Information collected through cookies or similar technologies may constitute or be linked to personal information.
This may include:
-
IP address;
-
device identifiers;
-
browser identifiers;
-
approximate location;
-
Store activity;
-
product interests;
-
order-related activity;
-
advertising interactions; and
-
customer-account information.
Where cookie-related information constitutes personal information, it is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable law.
15. Sale, Sharing and Targeted Advertising
JAPAN-ITEMS™ does not sell customer lists for money in the ordinary meaning of the word “sell.”
However, certain privacy laws use broader definitions of terms such as sale, sharing or targeted advertising.
For example, use of certain advertising technologies may involve transmitting identifiers or online activity information to advertising partners.
Where such processing falls within a legally regulated category and the applicable law provides a right to consent, reject or opt out, JAPAN-ITEMS™ will provide or honour the applicable privacy choice.
16. Cookie Duration
Cookies may remain on a device for different periods.
Session cookies
Some cookies exist only during a browsing session and are generally deleted when the browser session ends.
Persistent cookies
Other cookies may remain for a defined period or until deleted.
The duration of a cookie depends on its purpose and the provider that places it.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ does not necessarily determine the lifespan of cookies independently placed by third-party providers.
Customers may use browser or device controls to inspect or delete stored cookies.
17. International Data Transfers
Information collected through cookies or similar technologies may be processed by providers located in countries other than the country where the user lives.
This may include processing outside the European Economic Area.
Where international transfer restrictions apply, personal information will be handled using appropriate safeguards or transfer mechanisms as described in the Privacy Policy.
18. Security and Fraud-Prevention Technologies
Certain technologies may be used to protect customers, transactions and the Store against:
-
fraud;
-
unauthorised access;
-
payment abuse;
-
automated attacks;
-
malicious activity;
-
security threats; and
-
other misuse.
Some security technologies may process device, browser, network or transaction information.
Where such technologies are strictly necessary for security or fraud prevention associated with the requested Store service, they may be used without consent where permitted by applicable law.
19. Changes to Cookies and Technology Providers
The cookies, pixels, integrations and service providers used by the Store may change over time.
Changes may result from:
-
Shopify platform updates;
-
installation or removal of applications;
-
changes to payment providers;
-
new analytics technologies;
-
marketing-platform changes;
-
security improvements;
-
changes in customer-service tools; or
-
legal or regulatory requirements.
JAPAN-ITEMS™ may therefore update this Cookie Policy or the Store's consent interface to reflect material changes.
Where a change requires new consent under applicable law, appropriate consent will be requested.
20. Updates to This Cookie Policy
JAPAN-ITEMS™ may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, Store configuration, Shopify functionality, third-party providers, applicable law or privacy practices.
When this Policy is updated, the “Last updated” date will be revised.
Where required by law, additional notice or renewed consent may be provided.
21. Relationship With Other Policies
This Cookie Policy should be read together with the other JAPAN-ITEMS™ legal policies.

The Terms & Conditions govern the contractual relationship between JAPAN-ITEMS™ and customers.
The Shipping, Duties & Taxes Policy governs international fulfilment and delivery.
