Do You Have to Pay Import Taxes When Buying from Japan?

Category: Buying from Japan

Import duties and taxes may apply to goods shipped from Japan to the United States. The important question is whether these costs are collected separately on arrival or already included in what you pay at checkout.

Why are imports sometimes taxed?

Import charges depend on the product, applicable classification, customs value, country of origin and rules in effect when goods enter the US. Import processing and customs checks may still take place even when a seller offers an all-inclusive price. Never assume a low-value purchase is automatically exempt: regulations can change.

What is the difference between duties included and duty-free?

A duty-free product owes no relevant duty under applicable rules. 'Duties included' usually means the seller or logistics arrangement budgets for and handles the normal duty as part of the amount already charged to the buyer. These statements mean different things.

How does Japan Items handle US import charges?

Under Japan Items' standard all-inclusive delivery arrangement, applicable standard import duties, import taxes, standard customs clearance and standard carrier import-processing costs are included in the final checkout price, unless clearly disclosed otherwise. The buyer should not normally have a second standard import-charge payment upon delivery. This does not eliminate customs formalities or possible requests for information.

What if a delivery company requests money?

Do not ignore the notice or automatically assume it is legitimate. Contact support@japan-items.com as soon as possible, ideally before paying where practical. Supply your order number, carrier name, tracking details, amount and a copy of the charge request. The store reviews covered charges under its shipping policy.

What costs might be outside the standard arrangement?

Exceptional costs caused by an incorrect address, missed deliveries, refusal, reshipping, delayed response to customs requests or similar customer-caused circumstances may not be included. Review the policy and final checkout disclosure for the exact order.

Frequently asked questions

Are Japanese goods always duty-free in the US?

No. Duties and taxes depend on current law and the imported item.

Does 'all-inclusive' mean customs will not inspect my parcel?

No. Customs processing and lawful requests for documentation may still occur.

Should I pay a surprise carrier invoice?

Contact Japan Items support promptly with the request details and follow the official policy.
